Science and Technical Writing: A Manual of Style (A Henry Holt Reference Book)
Published in Paperback by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (March, 1994)
Author: Philip Rubens
Average review score:

One of the four essential books for the technical writer
This is the best style guide for technical writing I have ever found. It gives more every day practical information than any of the other technical writing books and gives that information in a highly usable format.

My only complaint--my standard complaint about my reference books--is that the index is far less comprehensive than it ought to be. Given modern computer indexing capabilities, one would think authors and publishers could do a better job.

However, with this is one of the four essential books: 1. Strunk and White, Elements of Style, 2. Prentice Hall, Words Into Type, 3. Garner, A Dictionary of Modern American Usage (for the British tech writer, Fowler's Modern English Usage) and 4. Ruebens, Science and Technical Writing. With these four, a technical writer can handle almost any situation that arises. There are other books covering special fields that can be added, but these four will always be the bedrock.

If you are a professional technical writer or only an occasional one, you can't go wrong having this book handy on your desktop.

Very useful
While Robert A. Day's How to Write & Publish a Scientific Paper gives a good overview of the writing and publishing process on a macro level regarding organization and presentation of material, Science and Technical Writing provides great detailed advice on a micro level. Philip Rubens gives very clear instruction on paragraphing, grammar, punctuation and spelling as well as the intricacies of how to present numbers, mathematical symbols and scientific notation. In addition, there are illustrated guidelines on how to design a variety documents such as brochures, manuals and newsletters right down to the page-level including representing information in charts, tables and diagrams. The book itself is well-designed and well-organized giving testament to its own advice. This is a good general reference for both writers and editors of science and technical documentation.

Snare of Serpents
Published in Audio Cassette by Books on Tape (January, 1990)
Author: Victoria Holt
Average review score:

An innocent girl on trial for murder
The story takes place in post-Victorian Edinburgh. A bankers daughter begins (too late) to notice all is not perfect in her perfect household. Her mother dies. Her governess is let go under mysterious circumstances. And a bawdy new governess moves in to take her friend and her mothers place---and all other things. Her father is discovered dead from arsenic poisoning---and she is accused of murdering him. I was surprised at the end---I felt sure I knew who had killed the girls father----but I'm not good at guessing, I guess.
The characters are pretty well thought out---theres a voyage to South Africa and the terrain is detailed. But the most standout of this book is the main characters illusions that the perfect way of life can go on uninterrupted. She certainly left one snare of serpents for another, too. Very well written and interesting.

Another Great from Victoria Holt
Victoria Holt once again sweeps her readers into the life of another heroine, Davina. Through the audio version it almost sounds as if Davina might be telling you her story yourself. She is suspected of murder in Scotland but it can't be proven so she goes to South Africa to escape gossip but the nightmare continues there until in the end everything turns out all right and she ends up with the man of her dreams.

The Soy Revolution: The Food of the Next Millennium
Should you add soy products to your diet? If so, how much and in what form? Stephen Holt, M.D. answers these questions, and many more, in The Soy Revolution: The Food of the Next Millennium.

Dr. Holt says that adverse lifestyle choices are the basis for many chronic diseases. Good nutrition is a major factor in lifestyle and health and he says that "soy foods are not only good sources of nutrition, they can prevent diseases and, in some cases, fractions of soy can treat diseases." The purpose of his book is help "sort through the facts about soy and guide you to the best ways to use this unique food in order to build and maintain health."

Dr. Holt has written and lectured extensively in the field of natural health.

He provides a brief history of soybeans, which were first grown 4,000 years ago in China. He then describes the nutritional qualities of soybeans, explaining that they are one of the few plants to "provide a complete protein source," which makes then a good meat substitute.

Remaining chapters discuss the specific role of soy products in diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Soy products are also useful in keeping the prostate, kidneys, and urinary tract healthy, and are of benefit to women undergoing menopause. One chapter is devoted to the special needs of athletes, and another covers the needs of children.

Dr. Holt quotes a variety of scientific studies as evidence of the safety and benefits of soy products. He says that "over several centuries, soy has shown itself to be one of the most important, healthful and safe foods on our planet." He provides lists of resources and information for those wishing to do their own research.

Readers wishing to achieve freedom from chronic diseases will find The Soy Revolution an excellent reference.

The gift of Dragon: soy revolution.

Chinese wisdom consider food as a medicine, so it prevent diseases. For more 4,000 years chinese people have used the sacred "Great bean" (soya) to restore proper heart, liver, kidney, stomach and bowel functioning.

My mother in law died because diabetes complications, my mother because of cancer. We can not afford to loose our relatives and ourselves because of ignorance. We need to read this book and find how to use all the soybeans products in our lives to protect our families. Education and Health Department of the States must teach different way to prevent illnesses and be a healthy nation. Is better to teach than pay billions in pills for ill people. We are loosing our best riches the life of the people.

Janice Holt Giles was a superb author.
I have read all of the books written by Janice Holt Giles, both the Piny woods series of which this is one and the moving west series many times. I loose myself after the first page or so and am completely immersed until I sadly turn the last page. Her research is fantastic. If she says it rained that day, you can bet it did. I was saddened to hear of Mrs Giles death and wish I could find an author I would enjoy as much.

Beautifully written and utterly captivating!
I began reading this book, against my will, simply to become more familiar with the authors of rural areas. Yet, after skimming the mere first chapter, I became entrapped into the unbelievable writing style of Mrs. Janice Holt Giles. I would recommend this book to anyone - especially to those who do not truly understand what life is like in a rural area. The characters are rich and easily related to, and I was utterly captivated by this realistic and creative tale!!

Tigers, Frogs, and Rice Cakes: A Book of Korean Proverbs
Published in Hardcover by Shen's Books (February, 1999)
Authors: Daniel D. Holt, Soma Han Stickler, and Lu Han Stickler

This beautiful book opens many doors
I thought Tigers would be great to use for a presentation as a lesson in an English language development (ESL) class. And it also would be a good interdisciplinary assignment--write it in English class and illustrate it in Art class. It would also be a good writing-across-the-curriculum activity for the art class. I showed it to my high school class today and we had a great discussion about proverbs and sayings in various cultures. A Punjabi girl who recently enrolled in my class shared one with us and it was the first time she had spoken up in class so I was pleased. It is interesting to see how many of the same ideas transcend language and culture and this beautiful book opens the door to have that conversation. Susan Davis, English teacher, Modesto, CA

Tigers, Frogs, and Rice Cakes arrived by UPS one morning.
I read it during my lunch time, enjoying it thoroughly. Not only is it a work of art, but a work of wisdom as well. A key to the proverbs at the back of the book was helpful in articulating these Korean pearls of wisdom.

I think my favorite on "character" is "It is dark at the base of the lamp." On "cooperation," I especially liked, "An empty push cart makes more noise." On "eating," I loved," Licking the outside of the watermelon." These proverbs help me see and understand human frailty, while suggesting something greater to strive for. They are whimsical, correcting me gently for my oversights. A great book for anyone under the age of 112.

A Great Tribute To A Great Man
Being the granddaughter of Tim Holt, I know a lot about him. But for someone who doesn't, this is the best book to read and learn about him. My favorite part of the whole book are all the wonderful pictures! David Rothel is a great writer, and he did a wonderful job writing this book! If anyone has any questions that aren't answeredby the book, e-mail me. Thanks! Happy Reading!

Exceptional, all-around book about the great cowboy star.
"I was five years old...I tried to sit up straight in the saddle as (my father) did, and every once in awhile I'd look down at my new cowboy boots...and I made up my mind that I'd never wear regular shoes again as long as I lived. I was going to be a cowboy for the rest of my life." Those are the words of Tim Holt later in his career, quoted in this magnificent book by author David Rothel. Tim Holt was a great "B" western movie cowboy star of the 1930's-1950's. His post-WWII western movie series that ran up until 1952 has to rate as the best series of "B" westerns ever made, with good acting, directing & production values, a lot of action, and great on-location photography. In many cases the RKO films made from 1947-52 should be more accurately referred to as "A-" westerns. The stories are always enjoyable and pleasing, and you can tell the good guys from the bad guys. Tim Holt was a fine actor and also appeared in several first class films such as Orson Welles' "The Magnificent Amersons," and with Humphrey Bogart in "Treasure of Sierra Madre." In his westerns he presents himself as a warm, easygoing & friendly cowboy with a good sense of right and wrong, a real hero. He is often drifting between jobs when the stories begin. This book is the first and only book about his life and films. I was born after his last westerns were filmed, and happened to discover the movies in the mid-1970's, after Tim Holt had already passed away (at age 54). I took an immediate liking to him as he presented himself in the movies, and when I later went to libraries and book stores to try to find information about him, found nothing except a few brief sections in several western film books. One paperback I found, "Great Western Heroes," published in the 1970's, gave more information than the other books, but not enough. Tim Holt has been a western hero to me since I saw the first movie, and it was a real joy to discover that this book existed when I found it on amazon.com. It's well worth the price. The book is well-written and is solidly bound with excellent print & photographic reproduction, has a great color cover of a more recent painting of Tim Holt, and is just loaded with a treasure trove of information on him. Childhood photos, reviews of all his films with accompanying pictures, copies of newspaper articles and his obituary, interviews and commentaries with his co-stars and fellow actors and family members, even copies of articles and interviews from western film magazines of the 1940's-50's. And some mysteries about his family life, his work after he walked away from acting (at age 33!) and did the rodeo circuit and shows, and the cancer that killed him are revealed here too. It's impossible to really express what a great book this is, and the author David Rothel deserves all the credit for the extensive research and effort he put into this magnificent volume. Highly recommended.

Beautiful Love Story
Years after her death, a book by JHG has been published that is a beautiful love story between two people at a time when divorce was against religious teachings. Yet these characters demonstrate that life is good even though all others seem to be against what would be the only way for them to lead the life they seem destined to live.

I could not put the book down until I had finished. It was too long in coming!
